Even since I switched over to version 8.4.0 at the beginning of the month, what used to be nicely formatted plain text emails aren't any more. Under the old version, a web page set up specifically to produce a properly formatted text-only message sent a message that looked right and worked in most email programs. Justin, your suggestion to remove the "mismatching_ip_address" check in Session.pm worked like a charm.
