Not sure if this is relevant. I wrote an application that medical resident use to keep notes on their patients. They wanted a similar thing. What I did was use a jquery autosave library to take the form, asynchronously post it to a backend routine which serializes the data into a kind of draft object and stores it in the db with the patient identifier.
