Hey William,
Thanks for the feedback - I'll be integrating it into the FAQ soon
(Really does help me out)
What constitutes "a whole lotta people"? I'm curious as an Dada Mail administrator how big is big
Good question, but it is subjective
Some people will have, "a lot"
be 100 people - for example in an entire small town parish; or, "a
lot", being their entire Asian consumer base for a fortune 500
company
In the first, Dada Mail may be installed on a relatively
cheap shared hosting server, I hope the latter is installed on a
pretty beefy server the company owns themselves; Since the server
environment and resources are different, both could theoretically be,
"a lot" :) I guess
I'll make a note that says something like, (100
to 1,000,000,000) :)
But to be more helpful, if you have more than 25,000 subscribers, I'd
say that is, "a lot" and you'd probably want to start thinking of
changing up the default configuration of Dada Mail, for example - use
the SQL backend for the subscribers
I'd also suggest using the
bounce handler, since no one wants to go through the kind of bounces
that sort of list is going to bounce back by hand - it'll be between
1 and 50% of your list bouncing back (depends on how old the list
is)
Receiving thousands of messages back is just going to be a
resource issue on your server that the bounce handler will take care
of, hopefully
These issues are less of an issue if you have a beefy
collocated server or your own server
But if you do get thousands of
bounced back, all at once, you'll cause a DoS attack, since all these
bounces will be coming from different places (coming from experience!)
If you're on a shared hosting account, you can have a list that
large, but do look into seeing what the sending limitations are for
your account
It seems that many have a 500/hour limit
With this
limit, your mailing would have to go for 2 days, but since there's
now (or will be in a stable form, really, really soon) a sending
monitor utility in Dada Mail that works (or
should work in a
stable form, really really soon) pretty well, it shouldn't be an
issue, as long as you're willing to wait
Since email is basically a
message waiting for you already, the majority of circumstances out
there will fall in that
Some that may not would be a discussion list
where you want people to get a message at basically the same time
I
don't know anyone how has a 25,000 member discussion list using Dada
Mail, though ;)
It's probably a good idea to educate some of these hosts that Dada
Mail is going to be a really good choice for people who want/have a
large mailing list, but are on a shared host
I know many hosts have
MailMan already, but I also have the feeling it's not as well liked
as Dada Mail, just from the amount of installs I do on sites that
have MailMan as a feature in their Cpanel :)
I think I answered your question and then some
Curse this coffee
drinking habit!
