Hello everyone
I've been commissioned to (re)make the archive editor
for Dada Mail
Below is a small writeup of what I propose
I'm asking
for anyone that's interested to give me some comments and feedback on
the below ideas so that I can have this feature work great for as
many people as possible - thanks!
Background
Dada Mail had an archive editor, but as the complexity of messages
Dada Mail could create increased, the less usuable the editor became,
since the editor could only edit singlepart messages which were
either PlainText or HTML
Messages sent from Dada Mail can be
singlepart, multiplart/alternative (text and HTML version included)
and multipart/related (text and/or HTML with attachments that have
something to do with the main message
The other problem was that Dada Mail's archive system also didn't
save anything except plaintext/HTML messages correctly
This problem
has been solved since version 2
9
An editor of the archives has
still not been created
A third party has expressed interest in starting a subproject in Dada
Mail to put back the archive editor in Dada Mail which will be able
to work with complex email messages
I propose, as a starting point of the archive editor, it has the
following functionalities:
Understand complex email messages
For multipart/alternative messages:
Has the ability to edit the HTML version of the message and create
the plaintext version from the newly edited HTML version
For messages with attachments:
Have the ability to Delete the attachment, or replace the
attachment with another file, that can be uploaded
Initially, this feature will NOT be a part of the main Dada Mail
program, but rather will be released as a plugin
Doing this:
development and testing can be done towards a feature complete
subproject, before it's added to the main program
Most likely, the plugin will be available to the public in the next
maintenence release of Dada Mail
Maintenence releases do not
usually have major feature enhancements
Since there isn't any
development of Dada Mail 2
11, or 3
0 planned (although this very
feature is slated for 2
11), this is an interesting way to develop
new features without (yet) branching for the new version
This will also allow me to deliver this feature very soon (within a
week!) instead of having people wait for the next major release of
the program, which may be months away
The above development scheme has been working very well for another
plugin, dada_bridge
pl - which allows for discussion lists in Dada
Mail
This feature, from the start, was announced as something that
will be in the core of Dada Mail, but is currently in a beta form
It's currently being used by the Dada Mail Developers themselves very
effectively
The above report has been put together to request feedback and
comments about the archive editor itself and any aspects of how it
should be designed
All comments and feedback are welcome
