Does size matter?

We just launched a new version of our daily news email on Tuesday. As usual, we are sending a web page. In the scheme of things, the size of the message went up from about 30 MB to 80 MB (more content). The impact is that our mailout time went from about 2 hours for a little over 10,000 subscribers to around 10 hours to complete. Nothing has changed other than the size of the file.

So, are we seeing the drop-off in throughput due to a larger message being sent? We think this is probably the issue, but want to confirm it. The mailing rate for bulk mail is set at the highest rate, 180 messages per batch, going to the SMTP server here on campus. According to the settings, Dada Mail reports:

Messages will be sent at a rate of up to 324,000 messages/hour.
Mailing to 10,392 subscribers will take at least 1 minute, 55 seconds.

While we would like to see this speed, we have never come anywhere close to this. How are these numbers calculated?

We are running Pro Dada version 9.0.3 Stable 01/14/16 (have been too busy to upgrade).

We have some other tricks we are going to try, but would like to have as much information as possible as we work toward a solution to our slow mailing.
