Text Emails Aren't

Even since I switched over to version 8.4.0 at the beginning of the month, what used to be nicely formatted plain text emails aren't any more.

Under the old version, a web page set up specifically to produce a properly formatted text-only message sent a message that looked right and worked in most email programs. It was sent via the "Scheduled Mailings" that had an option to send a "PlainText Version" fetched from a URL.

and so on. Under the new version, there is still a choice to grab the message from a URL but it doesn't work the same way (neither does "Create a PlainText version automatically"). The system requires that there be _something_ in the HTML section, either a URL or some text in the "use this content" box. Either way, the result is a mess:

and so on. There are no line breaks when people view the message. When using the "Message text garbled?" feature in Gmail, the message shows up the way it should, but it is truly plain text with no active links, which defeats the purpose of sending out this email every workday.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but it is frustrating to a lot of users, who would prefer to see plain-text messages.
