Two questions: 1) Is it possible to install the newest version and test it out concurrently before committing my current installation?
It really depends on what version you're running now - what are you running?
In the upgrade docs, I talk about simply moving the dada directory, instead of removing it, so if something goes sour, you just move it right back to where it was,
2) What directories do I need to backup to preserve my current installation so no matter what I do, I can revert back to my current install? - just \cgi-bin\dada\, \fkceditor\, and dada_files\?
And probably whatever backend you have If it's the SQL backend, backup that, too
And I'm wondering why you listed the FCKeditor directory?
