If it really is such a big issue to make these database changes, then maybe the version number should be incremented more (maybe 4 1) to remind people that this is not just a bugfix or small upgrade
BTW, I thought I remember a discussion about the equals sign at the end of the message I could not find the discussion, but the equals sign is still there

dada_settingsCONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_bin;From my experience, this'll muck up everything that's not Latin1, unfortunately There's a lot about this problem around the intertubes:
