FYI: Hotmail-friendly message styling using CSS

A heads-up for anyone who sends HTML emails with CSS styling:

Justin has (elsewhere) recommended a March 2004 article at A List Apart, titled "CSS and Email, Kissing in a Tree," as an excellent primer on how to construct CSS-styled emails so they come out the way they're supposed to at the receiving end. And it's still available at:

However, the discussion that followed the article on the ALA site has recently been deleted with their latest (quite pretty) redesign.

One particularly useful comment in that follow-up discussion explained a workaround for getting Hotmail to accept internal stylesheets. Essentially, it suggested copying your stylesheet from the <head> into the <body> (where Hotmail won't strip it)...and keeping a duplicate of the same stylesheet in the <head> for all other email clients.

If you ever need to refer (yourself or others) to the original comment (titled "Another Hotmail Approach--if you care...", by blakems), you can find it in the Wayback Machine at:

and can also read the related follow-up comment (titled "Problem solved? Update this article?", by stylo~) at the top of:

...Plus now, of course, the essence of it is here in dadadev's easily searchable archives as well. :-)

_s.
