Yup, that was the first thing I thought of too! The problem is a technical one, however: HTML's <select> element doesn't use a width attribute, so the only way to make those dropdowns wider is by adding non-breaking spaces (&nbsp;) to the end of some or all of the available options. And unless we change those options to monospace fonts, the number of spaces to add is a guessing game that will work for some users (who will have the same fonts installed as we do), but never for all of them.

Here's the layout options page I originally sent to Justin on this. If you have any other ideas or thoughts on it, feel free to send 'em my way. (Option 3 is looking better and better to me every day....)

I agree that everything in the control panel needs a good once-over for usability, consistency and aesthetics. But before we can do that, all the form bits & pieces that are still in tables need to be upgraded to CSS-only layouts, because some of those tables are creating layout bugs of their own. And alas, that's a bigger job than is manageable for the next stable release.

If anyone wants to help out with that CSS upgrading, however, your assistance would certainly be welcomed! I've been meaning to collect all those table-based layouts onto one page for easy review and consideration; once I do, I'll post it on the list.
