Here is a follow-up. In searching for a possible solution, I found a message I had posted here back in February about the same problem. At that time, I was able to back off the MacPorts upgrade and things worked. This time, I changed mail.cgi to point to perl5.16 (the default is perl5.22) and everything started working again. I did find a number of references in my search to this error going from a warning in Perl to an actual error. Here is the full error from the log (I left off part in the previous message; got in a hurry with people breathing down my neck since the daily email didn't go out on time):
